Trade and Investment Projects in Botswana
In Botswana, the Hub is supporting economic diversification, job creation and fostering a business environment conducive to trade and investment. The Hub implements activities in four critical areas:

Finance and Investment
Accelerating U.S. and international investment to businesses to promote strategic value chains and grow international trade links
Export Competitiveness
Helping companies to leverage AGOA to increase exports to the U.S.
Enabling Environment and Trade Facilitation
Fostering transparent, reliable, efficient and cost-effective trade policies and related infrastructure
Agribusiness
Increasing the competitiveness of agricultural value chains for export through investment, technology transfer, and greater private sector participation

Core Activities in Botswana
Finance and Investment

  • Collaborating with SADC and the Botswana Investment and Trade Center to develop and implement the National Action Plan on Investment
  • Developing financing mechanisms for smallholder farmers, including trade finance and warehouse receipts, which producers can use as collateral to obtain loans and insurance
  • Partnering with international financial institutions to identify potential opportunities in Botswana

Export Competitiveness

  • Assisting the government to develop and launch an African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Response Strategy
  • Assessing export-readiness of firms in targeted sectors, including accessories and textiles
  • Linking strategic sectors to regional associations and external markets
  • Supporting women-owned businesses through the African Women Entrepreneurs Program (AWEP) exhibit at the Botswana Global Expo

Enabling Environment and Trade Facilitation

  • Providing technical support to the Unified Revenue Service on a revised customs act and related regulations
  • Supporting the sustainability of the Botswana Trade Information Portal
  • Assisting the National Trade Facilitation Committee with trade initiatives

Agribusiness

  • Training exporters of livestock to utilize AGOA by complying with standards, certifications, traceability and rules of origin requirements
  • Facilitating agribusiness attendance at international trade shows
